The key reference point of the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble’s new production is Zoltán KODÁLY’s life works. Just like in the Ensemble’s previous performances, tradition is brought to stage with extreme vitality, in symbiosis with contemporary artistic expressions.
The musical framework of the story, which evolves from the small events of an imaginary community, is provided by the compositions of and folksongs collected by Kodály (and his contemporary Béla BARTÓK). Throughout the scenes, we follow the evolution of human relationships and the loss thereof, joys and grieves, as well as the rituals of everyday life and those of festivities.
A richly nuanced, lyrical-associative imagery and a spectrum of playful changes in time and space lead the audience to the final scene: the cathartic enunciation of the triumph of human existence, of life itself.
The show is a joint production of the Hungarian Heritage House, the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble, the Budapest Spring Festival and the National Dance Theatre.

To enter into an engagement over and over with what is ours - sonorous singing, healing spells, values, spirit, and mentality preserved in movement. The visible essence, which is otherwise evoked behind our closed eyes, emerges in this piece of poetic dance theatre like an embossed sculpture from the surface. This reality can be ours today, if we are willing to let it in.

In the world of our stage Transylvania and a wedding intertwine; home, motherland, and marriage. This folk weave is the parallel of marriage and historic memory, meeting in the infinite. In the cycle of life - marriage - death, we want to talk about ourselves, our values, and about the present as we perceive it.

Existence is determined by the meeting and courting of man and woman. Marriage is the most important, and perhaps most difficult part of human life. The wedding is a kind of threshold, a transformation, a sacral substantiation. The road leading to it, the wedding, the guests, and all its ceremonies are vivid in our shared consciousness. What do we take on from this by our commitment? What do we commit ourselves to today? We ask ourselves by recalling the greats of the past - is it possible to preserve the spirits of the Bethlens, of Bolyai, Kőrösi, APOR Péter, MIKES Kelemen, BÁNFFY Miklós or TAMÁSI Áron? Does spirit reverberate in today’s man? What has lifted spirits from the beginning of time, and what has remained of what had existed in early the and long-past spirit of Transylvania? What can be passed on and what disappears with the internal changes of history and of man?

Our folklore theatre poem is a chain of lyrical and dynamic dance etudes - the polyphony of states performed through live folk music, singing, choral singing, projected animation, and dance, which altogether create a new world for a hope which strengthens home.
